Coaching

Coaching for the Actor:
"When the acting is truthful and rooted in the real, then the extraordinary happens."
Actor training never ends. Throughout my professional career as an actor, I’ve sought out training. Acting is a craft that involves technique and instinct. These serve one another. The technique and practice of effective acting methods allow the actor to grow more and more towards powerful, engaging, and liberating performance.  An actor’s job is to serve the story, so it is up to the actor to discover the story and to inhabit it so that it reaches the audience.  In my sessions with you, I will give you direction and specific notes to help strengthen your monologue or scene work. This will involve work on the text and acting objectives, obstacles, beats, questions about the character, finding the dynamics and movement in the text, improving blocking and movement, and personalizing the work.

Work for the actor also involves identifying and working to eliminate physical and vocal tensions or habits that are getting in the way of more connected and powerful work.  Much of our work involves learning how to be “in the moment” and “present” onstage. Acting technique can help you deal with stage fright, find your focus, commit to the fullness of the character, connect imaginatively to the world of the play, and to find an abandon, freedom, truthfulness, and joy in your performance.  As you learn and practice the tools of the craft, the freer you become in performance.
Coaching for any Speaker
"Anyone who speaks and interacts with others can benefit tremendously from the skills an actor has acquired."
My experience as a professional actor can benefit a wide range of individuals, including performers, teachers, public speakers, lawyers, business professionals, students.  Anyone can benefit from acting coaching to learn how to more clearly and effectively convey the words they speak in a way that engages their listener.

Learning to connect with your audience and to listen is key to becoming a great communicator. Acting technique - the craft and experience of a professional actor - can help you accomplish that.  As a professional actor, I can help you identify and release physical and vocal tensions, deal with nervousness and the habits that diminish your effectiveness in communication.

Words matter. And your spoken words need to reach your listener. Whether or not you are an actor, the way of the actor is a path that can lead you into a more naturally engaging presence and connection with others.

As well as coaching privately, I taught university Acting and Scene Study, and Voice and Movement classes to undergraduates in the arts program at TWU in BC. Below is an email from one of my students.
From a student email, received July, 2022:

“...you taught me for a term in 2020 at TWU. It was my very first acting class and you made a strong impression on me. And I still have the book Second Circle you gave me, which makes me think of you! You’re my very first acting teacher and you somehow distilled this respect for the craft in me. You did it through your passion and sincerity. I was offered a place at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland a few months ago, which I accepted the offer and will begin my 3-year conservatory training in Glasgow this fall. I just want to say thank you...”
